Dr. Amanda Mooneyham has a 90 decibel hearing loss in both ears, which is considered profound. She can read lips and, with the help of hearing aids, can hear speech as long as the words are spoken clearly and in her direction. She recently graduated from U.C. Chris McCulloh, MD, is a resident in general surgery at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey. He is currently finishing a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship in pediatric surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where his research has focused on stem cell therapy in necrotizing enterocolitis.
He soon plans to resume residency training at Morristown and will apply for fellowship training in pediatric surgery. He had to take a year off medical school to focus on rehab after an accident led to a spinal cord injury. Click here to read his blog.
Dr. Stanley F. Wainapel is the clinical director of rehabilitation medicine at Montefire Medical Center in the Bronx. At age 8, he received a diagnosis of choroideremia, a rare retinal disorder that causes blindness. At 23, he graduated from medical school at Boston University. When Dr. Janice E. Brunstrom-Hernandez was born in Seattle three months early, on October 29, 1962, her parents were told she had no chance of surviving. And if she did live, doctors said, she would not be able to walk or talk and would be mentally disabled.
